Exeter City’s statement on Peter Fox’s departure after the 3-1 home defeat to Leyton Orient. Issued 9th January 2000.
Following discussions with the team manager, and with great regret, Exeter City have agreed to release Peter Fox from his contract with the Club with immediate effect.
A season which started with such bright promise is now in danger of collapsing into disaster. Although 10 points above the bottom club in Division Three, Saturday’s home defeat by fellow struggler’s Leyton Orient exposed the Club to the probability of a long struggle against relegation. At a time of major ground improvements at St James’ Park, such a situation cannot be allowed to develop further, and Peter Fox has accepted that the Club needs a change of management so that confidence is restored. Chairman Ivor Doble commented:-
As player and manager, Peter has achieved much for Exeter City, and I am deeply sorry that he now feels it necessary to leave the club.
I, and others, have always backed in judgement and, within our very limited financial resources, have supported his efforts to create his winning team. Apart from our current League position, Peter leaves the cub in good shape.
Since being appointed manager at a time the club was in Administration, Peter has worked tirelessy and with magnificent commitment.
Unfortunately, results on the field are what matters most. I look to the full support of our players and all staff to the backing of all those who long for a successful Exeter City. A number of other changes may be necessary and I will ensure that these take place.
The club would like to make an early appointment of Peter’s successor, but it has to be someone right for Exeter City. Meanwhile, Noel Blake (assistant manager) will take charge of the first-team squad and team selection.
I conclude by expressing my personal sadness at Peter’s departure and thank him and his wife, Leigh, for all they have done for the club. I know that better days will return for them in the future.
